Challenges

One of the primary challenges was to keep the client’s costs to a minimum while reducing the reinstatement time. SiBCAS provided an innovative surface-mounted concrete plank solution that could be installed quickly. This method, which involved surface mounting onto the client’s prepared stone base, eliminated the need for below ground excavations when the buildings were removed. Additionally, due to the wide curriculum being taught in the modular buildings, there was a need for the construction team to provide a high level of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (F,F&E). SiBCAS worked closely with the client and their F,F&E installer from the design phase through to the installation of the furniture and equipment in the specialist teaching areas.

Solution

The modular building was designed to accommodate secondary school pupils and met the Department for Education (DfE) and Building Regulation standards. It was built to withstand daily use by over 700 students. The curriculum that was to be covered in the 26 classrooms included a wide range of subjects such as IT, Graphics, Food Technology, Construction Textiles, Resistant Materials Workshop, and Art & Technology. This comprehensive approach ensured that all educational needs were met within the temporary facility. SiBCAS were able to deliver the 26 classrooms, including staff offices, SEN Group facilities, prep stores, hygiene room, plant room, server room, internal stairwells and external ramp and step access comprising of 106 modules, within an impressive 20-week period.

Outcome

The project was successfully completed, and the buildings were handed over to the client. The school was able to occupy the new facilities in time for the pupils’ return after their Easter break. This ensured minimal disruption to the students’ education and allowed the construction team to proceed with the demolition and rebuilding of the main school.
