THE BRIEF AND METHODOLOGY:
To design, build and install Modular PermaSpace Classrooms to provide additional teaching space during extensive refurbishment to the main building at Newcastle Royal Grammar School. All of the modular buildings had to fit into as small a footprint as possible. SiBCAS were also required to install foundations, trackway and accessible ramps.
The best design ended up being two complexes. The first of these being a 100’ x 32’ double stacked modular building and the second a 100’ x 32’ single stacked building. The mobile classrooms were all to be joined externally using a slabbed walkway system. This is accessed by either a ramp or stair arrangement. The top units of the double stacked arrangement are accessed by an internal staircase.
- Size: 1 no. 100’ x 32’ single storey and 1 no. 100’ x 32’ 2 storey
- Timescale: 2 year hire
Modular Classrooms including general teaching space, science labs and a computer suite.
One of the main challenges was the access to the site. SiBCAS had to pass through a gap between two brick buildings, which was not much wider than the modular buildings themselves. This meant using our most experienced drivers and operations staff to bank the buildings onto site. This was a lengthy process, but carried out professionally and safely, throughout the delivery process.
Once through the GAP, the vehicles had to travel along a pre-laid aluminium trackway to the unloading area. This trackway ensured that the client’s well manicured lawns, suffered the absolute minimum of damage by the delivery vehicle’s wheels.
The Modular Classrooms were delivered to site and installed as per the delivery schedule. The client was extremely happy with the product and all temporary classrooms were operational, within the timescale given at the start of the programme.
