Smart Motorways Joint Venture – Costain Galliford Try JV

Brief

To fabricate and install a double storey modular project office for 150 office staff, complete with internal and external staircases. The modular building needed to cater for all aspects of the project and required the following: reception area, meeting rooms, training room, CCTV room, first aid room, staff canteen and kitchen areas on both levels and toilet facilities, all of which were designed to a specific layout to meet the client’s requirements. The modular building was complete with timed heating and air conditioning. SiBCAS was also required to deliver a purpose built, anti-vandal gatehouse at the entrance to site, to allow the client to control all security and deliveries on site.

Project Scale

  • 60 No. (9.75m x 3m) modular sections
  • Size: Double Storey – 91m x 9.75m (300’ x 32’) – Total Area – 1620m2
  • Timescale: Lead time from placement of order – 8 weeks, installation time – 8 weeks, hire period – total – 74 weeks

Building Use

Modular Building to be used as project offices and welfare facilities to deliver the Smart Motorways Scheme on the M1

Challenges

There were several challenges with this project that SiBCAS had to face; Firstly the building had to be designed, so that after a 47 week hire period, 24 sections could be easily removed leaving the remaining 36 sections in place for the final 26 weeks of the project. This would leave the client the required space needed for their office staff to comfortably operate, and would also include key areas such as the CCTV room.

Secondly, due to the tight program from placement of order to start on site, SiBCAS had to work very closely with the client to ensure their program of civils work on site fitted in and matched the modular installation schedule.

SiBCAS then introduced an accelerated program and a phased delivery, to ensure that a number of office staff could be accommodated within the first phase part of the building, which was completed and handed over. The office staff could then proceed with their works whilst the second phase of the modular buildings was being installed.

Solution

Outcome

SiBCAS delivered the modular office building on time, to budget and to the client’s full satisfaction.
